Phillip Island Penguin Parade Map and Island Layout
Phillip Island is bigger than the photographs suggest and its attractions sit at opposite ends of it, with no public transport between them. This is where everything is, how long the hops take, and how to order a day so the sunset does not catch you on the wrong side of the island.
Where the Penguin Parade actually is
The reserve is at 1019 Ventnor Rd, Summerlands, Victoria 3922, at the far western tip of the island on the Summerland Peninsula. That is the single most useful thing to fix in your head: the Penguin Parade is not at the bridge, not in the main town, and not next to the koalas. From the bridge it is a further 20 minutes of driving, straight across the island and out along the peninsula.

The island in one picture
Think of a rough triangle about 26 kilometres across. The bridge from San Remo lands at the eastern corner. The main town, Cowes, sits on the sheltered northern shore. The surf coast runs along the south. The Penguin Parade is the western point, and The Nobbies is four kilometres beyond it, at the end of the road.
Everything on the island is within twenty minutes of everything else by car. Nothing on it is within reach of anything else on foot.

The Summerland Peninsula
The western arm, and the part of the island that used to be a housing estate. It holds the Penguin Parade, the beach the birds cross, the boardwalks at The Nobbies and the view out to the seal colony. The Boulevard runs along its southern edge between the two, open to moving traffic but not to parking.
There is no fuel, no shop and, with the Nobbies Centre closed, no cafe or toilet out here except at the Penguin Parade Visitor Centre. Arrive with what you need.
The east: Newhaven, Churchill Island and Cape Woolamai
The first few kilometres after the bridge. Churchill Island sits just off Newhaven on its own small bridge, and Cape Woolamai — the island’s highest point and its big surf beach — is a short drive south. If you are coming from Melbourne, this corner is the natural first stop rather than the last.
The north: Cowes and the Esplanade
Cowes faces the mainland across the channel, which is why its beach is calm and its jetty is where the ferry lands. It has the island’s shops, its restaurants and most of its accommodation, and almost every coach day stops here for an hour before the parade. It is about fifteen minutes from the penguins.
Driving times between the places you will want
The table above is the whole geography of a day here. In practice three hops matter: bridge to Cowes, Cowes to the koalas, and Cowes to the penguins. None is long, but they add up when you are trying to do the Koala Conservation Reserve before its 4.30pm last entry and be seated at Summerlands an hour before dusk.
Getting the sunset timing right on the road
Work backwards, always. Take the arrival time for your month, subtract an hour for being in your seat, subtract another fifteen minutes from Cowes or twenty from the bridge, and that is your latest possible departure from wherever you are.
In June that means leaving Cowes by about four. In January you have until half past seven. It is the same island and the same drive; only the light changes, and the arrival-times page has the figure for every month.
